Advanced Dental Crowns Can Improve the Function and Aesthetics of Damaged Teeth

Dental crowns can strengthen and protect decayed or fractured teeth, preserving your oral health and even improving the appearance of your smile. Jai H. Shin, D.D.S., can design and place custom-made dental crowns at our Manhattan, New York, office. At Lux Smiles, Dr. Shin will use precise techniques to ensure that your crown fits comfortably and blends beautifully with your smile. Our partner lab uses high-quality materials, including advanced porcelain and zirconia. Crowns made from these materials will have a realistic color and sparkle, and with proper maintenance, can last for several years.

A Closer Look at Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are customized, tooth-shaped restorations. Designed to encapsulate damaged teeth, crowns extend all the way to the gum line. Crowns are primarily intended for restorative purposes, including the repair of worn, broken, or cracked teeth. However, in some cases, Dr. Shin may recommend crowns to enhance the appearance of your smile.

Your crown can be made from metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-porcelain, or zirconia. Each type offers unique benefits. For example, metal is very strong but will be more visible. For this reason, Dr. Shin typically recommends porcelain or zirconia restorations.

Crowns encapsulate the entire visible portion of a tooth, providing stability and protection.

Is a Dental Crown Right for You?

A dental crown may be appropriate if you have been diagnosed with:

  • A cracked tooth
  • Severe decay that is too extensive for a filling
  • Internal infection, which requires root canal therapy
  • A worn tooth or eroded enamel, especially if it impacts your bite
  • An unusually shaped or disproportionately small tooth
  • Internal discoloration

Before he recommends a crown, Dr. Shin will make sure you are not suffering from gum disease and have enough healthy dental tissue remaining to support the restoration.

Creating and Placing Dental Crowns

Dr. Shin can typically design and place your crown in just two office visits. During the first appointment, he will reshape your tooth to accommodate the restoration and remove any damaged tissue. Before performing this step, he will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Once the tooth is modified, he will take impressions and send them to our lab. Then he will place a temporary crown to prevent sensitivity and maintain a natural look while you wait for your final restoration.

It will usually take about two weeks for the lab technicians to create your crown and send it back to our office. When it arrives, you will come in for your second appointment. Dr. Shin may apply a mild chemical agent to create microscopic grooves in your tooth. By etching the surface area, the crown can be attached more securely. Finally, he will use a specialized dental cement to attach the crown. Although you may experience some temporary sensitivity, after a few days, you should enjoy completely restored dental function.

How Can a Dental Crown Benefit You?

Crowns are some of the most versatile dental restorations available. They can correct many different structural concerns, and they can prevent additional issues in the future, such as recurring infection or decay. Because of our advanced planning methods and state-of-the-art materials, crowns can blend seamlessly to rejuvenate your smile. Once your crown is in place, it can be cared for just like a natural tooth with regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings and check-ups.
