How Invisalign Works

To straighten your teeth, Invisalign uses advanced technology to create custom aligners that straighten your smile without metal brackets or retainers. You’ll wear each set in the series for 20-22 hours a day and for 7-14 days at a time. As you progress through the series of aligners, you’ll notice your teeth getting closer and closer to their properly aligned positions. When you’re done, you’ll have a healthier-looking smile that you will enjoy for many years to come.

Indications for Invisalign

The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign in New York City is to schedule a consultation with us. During this consultation, Dr. Leonetti will assess your oral health and your orthodontic needs, and he will help you determine whether or not metal-free treatment with Invisalign is right for your unique situation. With all of that said, clear aligners have been used to help patients with the following:

Crowded Teeth

Crowded teeth can pose numerous problems – from low self-esteem to an increased risk of tooth decay. The good news is that you may be a candidate for Invisalign! In that case, we can use the iTero digital scanners at our Gramercy Park dental office to take detailed impressions of your teeth and create comfortable clear aligners.

Gaps Between Teeth

Unfortunately, noticeable spaces between your teeth can also negatively impact the look, health, and function of your smile. Fortunately, Invisalign offers an efficient and pain-free process to help adults and teens address this orthodontic problem – in an average of just 12-18 months too!

Bite Alignment

Invisalign doesn’t just straighten jagged or crooked teeth; it also helps people overcome underbites, overbites, and crossbites, making it the go-to choice for many dental professionals.

Invisalign FAQs

Is Invisalign Better Than Braces?

Sometimes, braces are a better option for treating severe and complex orthodontic issues. However, in most respects, Invisalign is a better option for people who qualify for clear aligner treatment. There are many reasons for this. First, Invisalign typically offers faster results than braces. Many people are able to get through Invisalign treatment in less than a year. If you only have minor orthodontic problems, you may be able to correct your smile even faster.

Invisalign also is more comfortable than braces. Switching between aligners usually causes less discomfort compared to having braces adjusted. Invisalign also does not have any sharp metal components that can poke, prod, cut, or irritate your mouth. You may even forget that you’re wearing your aligners!

Unlike braces, Invisalign is also removable. You can take out your aligners to eat and drink, so there are no dietary restrictions. You can eat whatever you want. You’ll also take your Invisalign out to brush and floss, which means it’s easier to keep your mouth healthy. Braces add some complexity to brushing and flossing and tend to trap more food and debris that can cause cavities and other oral health issues.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Invisalign is completely invisible when worn, and it won’t affect your speech once you’re used to wearing your aligners. Unless they look very closely, it will not be possible for other people to see your aligners. In contrast, braces have a very noticeable effect on your appearance, especially if you’re an adult. If you’d like a more subtle way to straighten your smile, Invisalign in New York City is certainly a better option than traditional metal braces.

How Long Do I Need to Wear Invisalign?

This depends on the specifics of your case and the severity of the orthodontic issues you’re facing. Most patients will wear Invisalign for around 12 months. However, some patients may be able to complete their treatment in just six months, while others may need to continue using Invisalign for up to 18 months.

If you’d like to get a more accurate estimate of how long your Invisalign treatment will take, Dr. Leonetti is here for you. At Lux Smiles, he can examine your teeth, put together a treatment plan, and give you all the details you need to determine if Invisalign is the right choice for straightening your grin.

Is It Possible to Speed Up Invisalign Treatment?

There are some steps you can take to keep your Invisalign treatment on track, and following these tips may even speed up the process. Firstly, and most importantly, make sure that you’re wearing your aligners for at least 20-22 hours per day. You should only remove your aligners to eat and drink as well as to brush and floss.

Wearing them for 22+ hours per day is ideal and may speed up your overall Invisalign treatment process. You should also make sure you swap to new sets of aligners whenever instructed to do so by Dr. Leonetti. If you don’t follow your treatment schedule, your treatment may be delayed.

You also need to come to Lux Smiles as scheduled for checkups with Dr. Leonetti. During your visit, he’ll make sure your treatment is on track, and he’ll provide you with a few new sets of aligners and instructions on when to switch to the next set.

You can also use Invisalign “chewies” to keep your treatment on track and even speed it up. These are small pieces of foam that you can chew when you switch to a new set of aligners. Chewing on them helps “seat” your aligners properly and ensure the proper fit on your teeth.

Is Invisalign More Expensive Than Braces?

Usually, Invisalign is not more expensive than braces. In fact, Invisalign is sometimes a cheaper option compared to braces, since it’s a simple treatment and requires fewer dental visits overall.
